LETTER TO THE LEADERSHIP OF MT. CARMEL HOSPITALS
Why Send A Letter?
We field a lot of questions about being prolife at our office. Without a doubt, the most frequent question that we are asked has been "Why does Mt. Carmel permit physicians who perform abortions to have privileges at the hospital?"
Traditionally, our response has been that this is a question that needs to be respectfully asked of hospital leadership. Moreover, we strongly encourage our members to pray for hospital administrators, who are responsible for thousands of employees as well as complex legal employment requirements, that they will always make protection of innocent human life - the unborn, the elderly, and the infirm, their highest priority.
When it came to our attention, however, that the website now refers patients to abortion doctors and facilities, we decided that the right course of action would be to send our own letter to the hospital system to make sure that it is aware of the situation. To properly convey the number of people who find this to be a serious concern, we would like to invite you to join us by signing our letter, which you can read to the right. If you agree with the content, we invite you to sign it by filling out the form below. Note: we may make minor adjustments to the formal letter (including address information and recipients), but the tone and the content will stay consistent. We will also provide the Hospital leadership with hard copies of the documents that we reference, as well as any personal comments that you choose to share below. We will remove inappropriate comments or obviously falsified information!
Signatures and comments will be taken until December 15, 2013. Thank you for your continued support, and please remember to keep hospital administrators, physicians, and other staff in your prayers as we seek a culture that protects all innocent human life.

Dear Mr. von Zychlin:
Central Ohio is very fortunate to have some of the best medical care available, right here in our community. As members of the local prolife community, we strongly appreciate Mt. Carmel’s commitment and mission to “… serve together at Mount Carmel in Trinity Health, in the spirit of the Gospel, to heal body, mind and spirit, to improve the health of our communities, and to steward the resources entrusted to us” while adhering to a moral ethic that upholds the innate dignity due to every human from the moment of conception until natural death. We know you are serious when you say “Mount Carmel conducts all of its operations and patient care in a manner that is consistent with our Mission and values.” We sincerely appreciate that you have placed all medical staff on notice that they are to “abide by generally recognized standards of medical and professional ethics including, but not limited to, the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Healthcare” (Staff Bylaws 3.95, pg 17)
Recently, it has come to our attention that Mt. Carmel hospital’s online physician referral page refers patients to several physicians and facilities that demonstrably violate our shared respect for human life. It is our goal to bring these concerns to your attention in the fervent hope that you will use your positions of leadership to make the necessary changes in light of these oversights and implement institutional safeguards to prevent future lapses.
Dr. Milroy Samuel is a well-known abortion provider in central Ohio. He, together with his father, run Complete Healthcare for Women, located at 5888 E Cleveland Avenue; Columbus, Ohio. This facility is an ambulatory surgical facility (ASF) licensed by the State of Ohio that provides abortion services. They also have several satellite offices that are not ASFs. Unfortunately, your website refers patients to Dr. Samuel and his abortion office. We would respectfully request that you take action to separate yourself from any association with both Dr. Samuel and the location where thousands of unborn children have been intentionally aborted in recent years.
Dr. Patrick Muffley is a local physician who runs a local practice called “Embody Health and Wellness.” Dr. Muffley has also recently been sanctioned by the Ohio State Medical Board for inappropriate sexual messaging of a patient and reportedly will face a 60 day license suspension. While Dr. Muffley does not specifically advertise abortion in his practice information, your webpage refers patients to the street address of the ASF located at 5888 E Cleveland Avenue; Columbus, Ohio. Again, we object to referring patients to an abortion facility in any way, even by association. It is worth noting that Dr. Muffley has recently updated his address information with the medical board and on his website, so he may have ended his affiliation with the abortion office. If he is not and does not intend to provide abortion services, his information should be updated on your website immediately.
Dr. Karl Schaeffer is also a local physician and part owner of Founder’s Women’s Health/Downtown Gynecologists. Your website, thankfully, does not refer patients to his abortion facility, but to his general practice office. Nonetheless, he has greatly profited off the blood of the unborn. He is frequently seen on site at the facility to perform abortions, usually on Wednesdays. Founder’s proudly claims to be Ohio’s first abortion clinic and is central Ohio’s busiest abortion provider. It has a history of unsanitary and unsafe conditions with the State Department of Health.
We, by our signatures attached below, would like to respectfully request that you review the physicians mentioned above and the scope of their practices and take the appropriate action to disassociate Mount Carmel from the bloody abortion industry. We have taken the liberty of attaching several documents to assist you in undertaking this review. Please know that you and all health care providers remain in our prayers, especially those who do not uphold our shared values.
