Should Ohio Law Encourage and Permit Suicide?
Ohio State Senator Charletta Tavares, who represents the 15th Ohio Senate District (Columbus) has recently indicated that she will be introducing legislation to make assisted suicide legal in Ohio. Ironically, the Senator's biography includes that she is a former president of the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation.
In the Columbus Dispatch, Senator Tavares was quoted as saying, "I want people to have an expiration that meets their physical needs, their spiritual needs and their families’ needs."
Ponder that statement for a moment. "I want people to have an expiration that meets their physical needs, their spiritual needs and their families' needs."
No one should die because they have unmet physical needs, lack spiritual support, or because it would be easier on their families if they were dead. No one. Sadly, the experiences of Belgium and the Netherlands tell us that this is what will happen once we head down the path of assisted suicide.
